自然宗教对话录是休谟的一本重要哲学著作，代表他晚年较成熟的哲学思想。休谟本人对于这本书非常重视，他在逝世以前曾经千方百计设法使这本书能够在他死后出版，不至被禁。这本书的主题是驳斥当时流行的宗教假设，也就是宇宙设计论以下简称设计论；设计论是当时宗教理论的中心支柱，驳斥了设计论，客观上就给予宗教本身以一冲沉重的打击。休谟对宗教的批判既影响了法国启蒙思想家，为他们所利用和受到他们的重视；也影响了康德，把康德“从独断的迷焚中惊醒”，康德也认为上帝的存在与否不能从理性得到证明，它只能是信仰的对象。设计论流行于十八世纪，经过休谟的批判，康德的传播，设计论在学术思想界再也站不住脚，此后也就不再有人以这一类的论证来证明上帝的存在。
